Random Thought #1: Remakes and more Sequels...Just stop

Howdy!

So I have to talk about a "controversial" matter relating to my major/career for the sake of my communications class requirements.

This topic really isn't a controversy than it is a observation/opinion I've noticed, along with others whom it may concern. So here it goes... an over abundance of recycled material in Hollywood.

In the past few years, I've seen many trailers and movies like Clash of the Titans, Oz, Alice in Wonderland, Hansel and Gretel, Jack and the Beanstalk (Or some title similar to that), The ThingThe Amazing Spider Man and most recently, Man of Steel. The movies themselves are alright, ranging from being favored to panned by critics. But does anyone notice something familiar about these new films? maybe too familiar?? That's just it; familiar in a way that these stories are being told over and over again. Don't get me wrong, some of these stories are timeless, but we don't need to be reminded that every five years or so with constant remakes and retelling of these stories. I'm just wondering...is Hollywood running out of ideas and original stories? I mean for instance, Spider Man has been around since the Kennedy administration and over the years we've been reminded of his iconic character through cartoons, comics and the (almost) recent Toby Maguire live action film adaption. Maguire's last Spider Man film debuted in 2007 and pretty much ended the Spider Man live-action film series... or so I thought. Not even five years later, we get the reboot with The Social Network's Andrew Garfield as the title role. Don't get me wrong, Garfield did a fantastic job as Peter Parker, but that's not the point in this matter. The matter here is that Hollywood is retelling this story again with different outcomes and characters but yet feels eerily similar to the original 2002 film. But again, why do we keep seeing remakes and reboots of so many franchises? Is it lack of creativity? Profit purposes? Or is it a demand of the public/general audience? Either way, I'm hoping Hollywood writers will eventually curve away from this trend and onto a new set of original stories to entertain us with through the magic of cinema.

Pilot Blog

Howdy!

My name is Lance Lozano, currently a sophomore telecommunications media studies major at Texas A&M University in College Station,Texas! I intend on getting involved in the film industry after I graduate from A&M, particularly with screenplay writing and directing. The initial intention of creating this blog is for my communications class, but if I happen to take a like into blogging, I'll be sharing more posts here more often in the future.
